Un giorno, però, accadde l’inaspettato! In un colpo solo, divorò un paio di pecore, un vitello e persino il pastore. La notizia, così come la paura, si diffuse rapidamente in tutta Ia Rendena.
Nessuno ebbe il coraggio di affrontare il drago, tranne due cacciatori della Val di Sole che, naturalmente dietro la promessa di una ricca ricompensa, accettarono la sfida. I due cacciatori raggiunsero le rive del lago dove trovarono l’enorme biscione verdastro, acciambellato su un lastrone di pietra, col muso nascosto tra le due zampe anteriori.
A quel punto uno dei due imbracciò il fucile, prese la mira con cura e sparò, colpendo a morte la bestia. Tra le poderose zampe posteriori, venne ritrovato un grosso uovo di drago, anzi, di draghessa!
Fu chiaro quindi a tutti che il drago aveva probabilmente assalito il pastore e gli animali solo per difendere il proprio uovo.
Dopo qualche settimana venne celebrata una grande festa nella chiesa della Madonna di Campiglio: i cacciatori ritirarono il premio che gli era stato promesso, mentre l’uovo ritrovato venne appeso alla parete della chiesa assieme alla pelle del basilisco, come ringraziamento per esser stati liberati dalla presenza pericolosa del drago.

The legend tells of a dragon that lived in the waters of the lake of Nambino, just above Madonna di Campiglio. He stood for months and months resting on the bottom of the lake, feeding on the fish and algae that he could find in its depths. Only from time to time emerged from the water and, after making sure that no one was nearby, went out to graze the grass of the meadows around.
One day, however, the unexpected happened! In one fell swoop, he devoured a couple of sheep, a calf and even the shepherd. The news, as well as fear, spread rapidly throughout Ia Rendena.
No one had the courage to face the dragon, except for two hunters from Val di Sole who, naturally behind the promise of a rich reward, accepted the challenge. The two hunters reached the shores of the lake where they found the huge greenish biscuit, curled up on a stone slab, with the snout hidden between the two front legs.
At that point one of the two braced the rifle, took aim with care and fired, hitting the beast to death. Among the powerful hind legs, a large dragon egg was found, indeed, a drachma!
It was therefore clear to everyone that the dragon had probably assaulted the shepherd and the animals only to defend their egg.
After a few weeks a big party was celebrated in the church of Madonna di Campiglio: the hunters withdrew the prize that had been promised, while the egg found was hung on the wall of the church together with the skin of the basilisk, as thanks for having been freed from dangerous presence of the dragon.
